Overview
While most people around the world learn English in school, very few are taught the key concepts of U.S. English pronunciation. Accent bias can put immigrants at a disadvantage and create barriers, even when they have excellent writing and reading skills. This class gives students the techniques and tools for U.S. English pronunciation like intonation, stress and linking. They will learn the importance of voiced/unvoiced sounds and how articulating word endings can convey unspoken information. At the end of this class, students will be provided resources for continuous improvement in verbal expression.
What You'll Learn
- A solid foundation for accent improvement, verbal expression and comprehension
- Proficiency in the building blocks of U.S. English
- A toolbox for continued pronunciation learning
- Higher confidence when speaking and a desire to speak more
Instructor Profile
Languages Spoken: English, French
Countries Lived In: France, United States
I’ve been teaching one-on-one U.S. English pronunciation classes for six years to financial executives in the pharmaceutical industry. They have been in the U.S. for over 20 years, but were realizing their accent was causing bias in many situations. I experienced a lot of accent bias in France, especially when I could hardly speak French. I taught myself how to hear the “music” of a language, and then learned how to transpose that knowledge into classes.
